CONWAY, S.C. - Winning five of the six singles matches to open the dual, Coastal Carolina's women's tennis team defeated No. 66 UNC Greensboro, 5-2, March 10. This was the Chanticleers' first win over a ranked opponent this year and moved their record 10-1 on the year, while the Spartans fell to 5-3.
Due to the threat of inclement weather, the two squads played the singles matches first on the day. Coastal took five of the six singles matches, getting straight-set wins in four of them. Coastal junior Miki Bunea handled Alex Whitehead at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4, while junior Lexi Bolesky didn't drop a game in her victory at No. 2 over UNCG's Stephanie Macfarlane. The Chants' senior Kim Webb earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 over the Spartans' Valerie Behr, while senior Paty Cortes battled back after dropping the first set to pull out a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Mikayla Rogers. In the No. 6 slot, freshman Mary Hill picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jessica Eblen. The only setback was at No. 5, where senior Maria Camberos fell to UNCG's Annette Rios, 6-2, 6-1.
After the match was clinched, the two squads played for doubles point, with the Spartans sweeping the three doubles matches. Bolesky and Bunea fell to Whitehead and Macfarlane at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. The duo of sophomore Caitlyn Brooksbank and freshman Alex Derungs lost a tough 8-7 (6) match to Eblen and Rios at No. 2, while freshmen Shelby Bates and Amanda Malatek lost 8-5 to Behr and Rogers at No. 3.
"It was good win against a strong team from the Southern Conference," Head Coach Jody Davis said. "Now we hope to play well over Spring Break. I am proud of our team's effort today."
After going 4-0 on this homestand, the Chanticleers will take to the road again, playing Sunday, March 14 against California (Pa.) in Morgantown, W.Va., at 9 a.m.
