CONWAY - The all-important doubles point and tough singles play helped the Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team earn a tough 4-3 win over Big South Conference rival Longwood.

With the win, the Chants move to 5-4 overall, 2-1 in the Big South, while Longwood drops to 2-7 (0-3).

The match began with Longwood’s No. 2 pair of Malin Allgurin and Sarah Moomau taking the first doubles win over Mikaela Davies and Vanessa Ortiz, 8-2.

The Chants battled back, taking the Nos. 3 and 1 matches to win the doubles point. Dominique De Wit and Libby Scott cruised to an 8-1 win over Longwood’s Hannah Hill and Nicole Parker at No. 3, while Kourtney Kowal and Shelby Bates claimed an 8-2 win over Marta Pinyol and Allison Shulman at No. 1.

Coastal struck first in singles play, with Alicia Robinson defeating Hannah Hill 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4. The Lancers then fired back, taking two points of their own as Malin Allgurin at No. 2, and Allison Shulman at No. 3 recorded victories in straight sets.

With the match tied at 2-2, Kourtney Kowal battled to give Coastal a one point lead, downing Sarah Moomau in the third set, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The lead would not last for long however, as Marta Pinyol, Longwood’s No. 1 singles player, won out over Libby Scott, 0-6, 7-6, 6-2.

With the match tied at 3-3, the final point rested on the No. 6 singles match between Coastal’s Dominique De Wit and Longwood’s Nicole Parker. De Wit took the first set 6-4, but dropped the second, 2-6. De Wit rallied back in the third set 6-4 to win the final point and seal the match for Coastal.

“Today’s match was a nail-biter and great college tennis match,” said coach Catherine Hewitt. “I can’t say enough about how the girls fought and pulled each other through. Dominique (De Wit) was our clincher and showed a tremendous amount of heart.”

The Chants will return to the courts Wednesday as they host UNC Charlotte for a 2 p.m. match.
