SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team won its fifth straight match following a 7-0 shutout of USC Upstate Saturday morning from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
The Chanticleers captured the doubles point after sweeping all three matches. Senior Caitlyn Brooksbank and sophomore Amanda Malatek won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles to give the Chants an early edge. The Spartans were without two players due to injury.
Freshmen Kourtney Kowal and Maria Hesketh clinched the point for Coastal following an 8-1 victory at No. 2 over Catherine Estupinan and Samantha Knopsnyder. Senior Lexi Bolesky and freshman Mikaela Kristofersson turned in an 8-1 win at No. 1 over Karen Martinez and Ana-Sofia Camberos.
Coastal quickly went ahead 3-0 with forfeit wins at No. 5 and No. 6.
Malatek clinched the victory for the Chants after downing Knopsnyder 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Kowal picked up her second win of the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Estupinan at the No. 3 position.
Bolesky improved to 4-2 this season after posting a 6-3, 6-3 win over Martinez at No. 1, while Kristofersson earned a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Camberos.
“This was a good start to the weekend for us,” Coastal Carolina head coach Jody Davis said. “We know that tomorrow will be a tough match against another quality opponent.”
Coastal returns to action Sunday at 12 p.m. when the Chanticleers face Wofford.
