Coastal Suffers 6-1 Setback at College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team ended its three-match road swing Thursday afternoon, suffering a 6-1 loss at College of Charleston.

In just its third away match of the season, Coastal (5-2) surrendered the doubles point and fell on three straight singles courts, allowing College of Charleston (2-2) to clinch the match.

"Today just wasn't ours," said Coastal head coach Catherine Hewitt. "The effort was there, we just couldn't put it all together. Hats off to College of Charleston, they executed very well at all spots."

Coastal opened the match with a 6-2 win by Alexa Tiefel and Maria Khomchenko on the third doubles court. The Cougars responded with 6-2 and 6-4 wins on the second and first courts, respectively, to take the first point.

Helena Nyikos struck first in singles at No. 4, followed by straight-sets wins by Liza Fieldsned at No. 1, and Mara Argyriou at No. 3 to seal the win.

Rachel McNeely added a three-set win at No. 5, as did Anastasia Palaska on the sixth court.

Coastal's lone point was provided by Natalie Wall, who topped Christi Woodson in a three-set rally at No. 2.

Next up, Coastal plays its final home match in the month of February on Feb. 19 when it welcomes Francis Marion to the Stevens Complex for an 11 a.m. tilt.
