Beach Volleyball Opens Season at South Carolina Tuesday
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team opens the 2017 season Tuesday evening at South Carolina. The match, scheduled for 6 p.m., is the first of two against the Gamecocks this season. The two schools will also meet on April 1 as part of the UNC Wilmington tournament.
Tuesday’s match will be streamed live online via SEC Network+.
It is the second season of beach volleyball at Coastal Carolina, and first under head coach Justin Stack. Stack is also a staff member of Coastal’s indoor team, and has previously worked with many of the student-athletes that are members of both squads.
Coastal will look to improve from last season’s 3-11 overall record as it begins its second year as an associate member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Chants play a total of 17 matches this season, including 11 conference and six nonconference contests.
The 2017 roster includes 10 returners and four newcomers.
Highlighting the returning members are Natasa Savovic, Tahleia Bishop and Aleksandra Djuric. Savovic led Coastal with a 7-5 record last season as part of Coastal’s top pairing. Bishop and Djuric comprised Coastal second pairing, and finished 5-7 while playing together.
Among the newcomers is senior Katie Davis, who played indoor volleyball at UNC Asheville before transferring to Coastal Carolina to use her final year of eligibility with the beach team. Kate Federico, a setter for Coastal’s indoor squad that won the 2016 Sun Belt Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, will also be seeing her first beach experience in a CCU uniform.
Coastal is scheduled to host its first-ever home matches this season, as the Coastal Carolina Tournament will take place April 14-15 at the new beach volleyball courts across Highway 501. ASUN members North Florida and Jacksonville will be in town as Coastal plays four matches at its new facility.
Following Coastal’s inaugural home match is the 2017 ASUN Championship, scheduled for April 22-23 in Deland, Fla., with all matches being streamed on ESPN3.
