COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball suffered a loss in its 2017 season opener Tuesday evening, falling 4 -1 to #10 South Carolina at Wheeler Beach.

Coastal (0-1) received its lone point from its top pairing, while South Carolina (8-0) won courts 2-5 to claim the rest of the available points and remain undefeated.

Natasa Savovic and Tahleia Bishop, pairing for the first time, defeated the Gamecock's top pairing of Adrianna Culbert/Ali Denney, 21-16, 21-18. The No. 1 match was the last to go final, as South Carolina had already swept the lower four courts.

All of Tuesday's matches were decided in straight sets.

Maci Tendrich and Shannon Williams opened with a win over Shelby Ladewig and Kate Federico at No. 4.

Katie Zimmerman and Katie Smith followed at No. 2, topping Katie Davis and Aleksandra Djuric.

South Carolina's third pairing of Carly Schnieder and Julia Mannisto then clinched the match after downing Sara Boothe and Carla Cahill.

The Gamecocks' final point came at No. 5, where Jade Vitt and Franky Harrison bested Autumn Otto and Mika Mierzwa.

Coastal returns to action this weekend with a pair of matches at UNC Wilmington on Saturday. The first is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by a second at 3 p.m.
