CONWAY - Coming off a Big South Tournament championship season and an NCAA regional appearance, the Coastal Carolina softball team will play a total of 30 home games and host three tournaments in 2013, highlighting the schedule released by head coach Kelley Green. The Chants will also travel to two other tournaments and welcome College of Charleston and UNC Wilmington for nonconference matchups.
The Kickin' Chicken Classic, the first of the three tournaments hosted by Coastal, will be held February 22-24, with Loyola-Chicago, Rhode Island and Saint Joseph's joining the Chanticleers in the field.
The Coastal Carolina Invitational will take place the following weekend (March 1-3) and feature the University at Albany, Drexel, Western Carolina and Wichita State.
The final home tournament, the Chanticleer Challenge, will run March 8-10 and include Georgetown, James Madison and Middle Tennessee State.
With the CCU Softball Field undergoing renovations, each of the three tournaments will be played at Grand Park Sports Complex in Myrtle Beach. The Chanticleers will play all of their other home games at Carolina Forest High School.
"We have put together a challenging schedule as we continue to improve our program's level of performance each year," head coach Kelley Green said. "Although we will be off-campus all season, we will make no excuses and will need our student-athletes to step up to the unique challenges awaiting us. How we all respond to this adversity will be a key component for our success this year. We are all looking forward to the opportunity to make 2013 the best season yet."
Coastal begins the 2013 campaign the weekend of February 8-10 at the Georgia Tech Tournament. There the team will face Missouri State and Georgia Tech twice and Kennesaw State once. The following weekend, the Chants will travel to Tampa, Fla., for the USF Tournament where they'll face Southeastern Conference power Tennessee, the host Bulls and ACC member N.C. State.
The Chanticleers will both open and close their Big South schedule in Virginia, making the trip to Longwood for three games on March 19 and 20 and visiting Liberty on April 26 and 27.
The Chants also travel to Gardner-Webb and Winthrop, while hosting league foes Campbell, Radford and Presbyterian for three games apiece. Coastal will play a doubleheader at Lowcountry rival Charleston Southern on April 2 and then host the Buccaneers for a single game on April 16. The Big South Tournament will be held May 9-11 at Winthrop.
In nonconference play, UNC Wilmington visits for a doubleheader on April 17 and College of Charleston comes north for two games on April 23. The Chants also travel to South Carolina for a doubleheader on April 10.
Coastal returns 15 members of the 2012 squad that tied a school record with 44 wins and notched a NCAA regional victory for the first time since 2000.
