Softball Announces 2009 Schedule

CONWAY, S.C.- The 2009 Coastal Carolina University softball team will participate in four tournaments and will host 28 contests from Coastal Carolina University Softball Field this season, Head Coach Jess Dannelly announced today, Sept. 17.

 

The schedule is highlighted by four teams that finished up last season ranked in the 2008 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Final Poll in Florida (No. 3) and Virginia Tech (No. 8), both of whom made it to the College World Series a year ago. Missouri (No. 19) and North Carolina (No. 20) were also consistently ranked in the top 25 all season. Also on the slate are three contests with Big South Conference foe Winthrop, who finished just outside last season’s top 25 and represented the league in the NCAA Championship. Overall, the Chants will take on six NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a year ago.

 

“This year's schedule is filled with quality opponents, but our success will be determined by how quickly our younger players grow up,” Dannelly said of his squad that will feature 13 underclassmen. “Their success will really play a big role in how far we go this year.”

 

The Chanticleers will be tested right away, as they travel to the University of Florida/Lipton Invitational to open the season on Feb. 13-15, taking on two 2008 NCAA Tournament qualifiers in Florida and Georgia Tech.

 

Following the Lipton Invitational, Coastal Carolina will return home to host the Kickin’ Chicken Classic, Feb. 20-22, and will take on Virginia Tech, Maine, Appalachian State and Western Carolina. Following the Kickin’ Chicken Classic. the squad will take part in the Jacksonville University Tournament, squaring off against Marist, Jacksonville and Vermont, Feb. 27-29.

 

Coastal Carolina will also host the Coastal Carolina University Softball Tournament, March 13-15, and will play Missouri, Michigan State and North Carolina.

 

Big South Conference play begins on April 4-5, as the Chants will host Gardner-Webb in a three-game series. Dannelly’s squad is slated to host Big South schools Winthrop, Charleston Southern, and Liberty, while traveling to Radford and Presbyterian.

 

The 2009 Big South Tournament is set for May 7-10, hosted by Radford in Radford, Va.

 

Coastal Carolina wrapped up its 2008 campaign with an overall record of 20-40, and was eliminated in by Liberty in last season’s Big South Tournament after going 2-2 in the double-elimination tournament.  The 2009 edition team returns six starters and 10 letterwinners.
