Softball's Johnson Named to the NFCA's Southeastern Region First Team

STARKSVILLE, MISS. – Coastal Carolina's Meagen Johnson (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown (Furman)) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Southeastern Region First Team as utility player, the organization announced this afternoon, May 17.

Johnson is the reigning Big South Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She also earned First Team Honors as a designated player. This season, Johnson leads Coastal in batting average (.396), hits (53), home runs (20), slugging percentage (.925), on base percentage (.517), runs batted-in (56), total bases (124) and walks (34). She leads the Big South in walks and slugging percentage while ranking second in home runs, RBI and third in batting average. Johnson’s 20 home runs this season set the all-time Coastal single season mark and her RBI total is the third best in a single season at CCU. She was named the Big South Player of the Week three times while also winning Big South Pitcher honors once. She became the first player in league history to ever be named both the Player and Pitcher of the Week in the same week, March 27. From the circle Johnson had a record of 9-3 with a 1.72 earned-run average. In 93.1 innings pitched this year, Johnson amassed 100 strikeouts while only allowing 74 hits.

She helped lead Coastal to its first berth in the NCAA Softball Tournament since 2001 and its first regular season title since 2003 this season.

Johnson will go on to the national ballot with the possibility of being an NFCA All-American to be voted on Monday, May 29.

Coastal begins play in the NCAA Tournament in the Athens Regional against Florida State on Friday, May 19 at 5 p.m.
