CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University softball team took home one of the top awards and had three players earn Big South Conference honors for their play in the regular season, it was announced at the awards ceremony Wednesday, May 12 prior to the Big South Tournament.
Freshman Jazmin Daigle was named the 2010 Big South Co-Freshman of the Year along with Liberty’s Kat Johnson and also was named to the All-Big South Second Team as a shortstop. Redshirt-freshman Cacia Pierre earned a spot on the All-Big South First Team as the designated player and senior Ashley Frederick was named to the Big South All-Academic Team.
Daigle ranks fourth in the Big South and leads all freshman hitters with a .371 batting average. Hitting in the third spot for the Chanticleers, the rookie leads her team in several offensive categories, including batting average, hits (59), doubles (9), RBI (28) and total bases (89). She recorded a 14-game hitting streak during the season, hitting .420 during the span. Daigle tallied 16 multiple-hit games and seven multi-RBI performances during her freshman campaign, including a grand slam in her first collegiate game against USC Upstate.
Pierre has been consistent at the plate this season for the Chanticleers as the designated player after missing last season due to injury. She ranks second on the team with a .348 batting average and 21 RBIs while also leading the team with a .560 slugging percentage and .448 on base percentage. Pierre has tallied 39 hits on the season, only striking out 19 times. She has recorded multiple hits 12 times, including going perfect at the plate four times and drove in the game-winning run against Winthrop May 2.
Frederick, who has a 3.93 grade-point average in finance, has been a strong threat on in the circle for the Chanticleers. She was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team and is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and Pi Mu Epsilon. Frederick was a three-time Who’s Who Among College Students and a member of the Wall Fellows Program at Coastal Carolina. She has made the President’s List and Dean’s List three times. She has ranked as high as 17th in the NCAA in walks allowed per seven innings with 45 walks in 190 innings pitched. Frederick ranks third in career strikeouts with 358 and leads the team with a 2.62 ERA and 143 strikeouts. She has pitched 19 complete games to rank second in the Big South and recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts against Liberty May 7.
Six-seeded Coastal Carolina will open the 2010 Big South Championship Thursday, May 13 against No. 3 Winthrop. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the CCU Softball Field.
