Chants Host Liberty for Final Regular Season Big South Three-Game Series
The No. 5 ranked Coastal Carolina University softball team (23-31, 7-11 BSC) will face No. 4 Charleston Southern for its first game of the Big South Tournament, hosted by Winthrop on Thursday, May 12 at 3 p.m. The winner will face No. 1 Radford at 8 p.m. Thursday night and the loser will play the lowest losing seed of Game 1 or 2 also at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Scouting Charleston Southern
Charleston Southern enters the tournament after taking two games from regular-season champion Radford to finish fourth in the league. The Buccaneers beat the Highlanders 3-0 in both game one and game two, but fell in the final game 3-2. Megan Lombard leads the team with a .335 batting average, 61 hits, 13 doubles, eight home runs and 33 RBI. Erin Kegley ranks second on the team with 49 hits and Jessica Brock is second with a .311 batting average and 31 RBI to tie Jana Matthews. Ace pitchers for Charleston Southern are Morgan Dowdy and Kimberly Hobbs. Dowdy has a 2.94 ERA, an 11-18 record in 44 appearances. She has thrown 17 complete games and has 115 strikeouts in 209.2 innings pitched. Hobbs leads the pitching staff with 133 strikeouts in 156.0 innings pitched and has a 13-13 record with a 4.40 ERA.
Series vs. Charleston Southern
Currently, the Chanticleers lead the overall series 51-24. The last meeting between the two teams was on April 13, 2011 at the CCU Softball Field with the Chants winning 4-1.

Coastal vs. Charleston Southern at Tournament
The Chanticleers have played Charleston Southern nine times in the Big South Tournament and Coastal is 7-2 all-time against the Buccaneers. Last season, the Chants defeated the Bucs 9-4 in the 2010 Big South Tournament to keep Coastal alive and end the Bucs run. The last time Charleston Southern defeated Coastal in the tournament was in 1988.
This Season vs. Charleston Southern
Coastal went 1-2 against Charleston Southern this season, hitting .222 against the Buccaneers. Chelsea Pineda leads the team with a .444 batting average, four hits, one double and three RBI. Pineda and Michelle Evans both slammed home runs. Ashley Bagwell is 1-1 against Charleston Southern.
This season, Coastal has never played on Thursday, but are 19-21 in day games.
Coastal Takes One From Liberty
For the first time in two years, Coastal defeated Liberty. The Chanticleers took it to the Lady Flames on May 7 as they won 2-1 after Sarah Maples doubled to left centerfield to bring in Coastal’s only two runs of the game.
Coastal Celebrated Senior Day
Seniors Katelin Edwards, Michelle Evans, Ashley Pisone and Olivia Williams were all honored at the last home game on May 8 against Liberty. The team celebrated the senior’s Coastal softball careers.
Home Field Advantage
The 2011 squad enjoys playing at home and have maintained a winning record at home while under the director of Head Coach Kelley Green. Last season, the Chanticleers finished with a 15-14 record at home and this season, Coastal finished with a 21-15 record at home.
