Softball Earns Dramatic Big South Opening Round Win Over Birmingham-Southern, 7-3

(release courtesy of Big South Conference)   CONWAY, S.C. – No. 4 Coastal Carolina’s Ashley Gerdts posted a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh as the Lady Chanticleers downed No. 5 Birmingham-Southern 7-3 in game one of the 2007 Big South softball tournament presented by Aéropostale. With the win, Coastal Carolina improves to 21-32, while the Panthers fall to 25-36.   Birmingham-Southern scored one run in the top of the first to take the early 1-0 lead.  Melissa Muehlenfeld led the inning off with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Reid.  Muehlenfeld stole third and came home on a groundout by Grace Stokes.   Coastal Carolina moved one across in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game up, 1-1.  With two outs, Kimberly Cillis homered to left field.   In the top of the fifth Birmingham-Southern retook the 2-1 lead, plating one runner.  Stokes reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on the next play.  Lindsay Creighton brought in Stokes with a deep single to right center.   Coastal Carolina tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom half of the fifth inning on a home run to left center by Glynn Tolleson   Birmingham-Southern plated one run in the top of the seventh to pick up the 3-2 lead.  With one out, Creighton singled to centerfield.  Erin Glover came in to pinch run for Creighton and moved to second on a single through the left side by Fox.  Honore’ singled to right field to plate Glover, moving Fox to third as Honore’ advanced to second on the throw.   Coastal Carolina posted four runs in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the 7-3 win.  Tolleson led the inning off with her second home run of game, a solo shot to left center.  Danyelle Gerdts followed with a walk and moved over to second on a single by Cantrell.  Birmingham-Southern intentionally walked Sheppard to load the bases.  Ashley Gerdts followed with a grand slam to close the game out.   With the win the Lady Chanticleers will now play No. 1 seed Liberty in game three at 3:00pm.  Birmingham-Southern will play the loser of game two at 10:00am on Friday, May 11 in the first round of the consolation bracket.       Quotes Birmingham-Southern Head Coach Tyra Perry “I thought it was a hard-fought game and we played well, but Coastal is a good team, too, and hit really well today.
