Sheppard, Gerdts, Cantrell and Hood Earned All-Conference Honors at Annual Big South Banquet
CONWAY, S.C. Seniors Kristina Sheppard, Danyelle Gerdts, and Carla Hood and junior Allison Cantrell all received softball post-season honors, announced Wednesday evening at the annual tournament banquet held in Kimbel Arena. Sheppard earned First-Team All-Conference honors, while Gerdts and Cantrell earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team, and Hood was named to the All-Academic Team.
Sheppard currently leads the team in batting average with a .342 and is 10th in the conference. She has 53 hits this season with 33 RBI, 11 doubles, one triple and nine home runs with a slugging percentage of .600. She has played a total of seven positions this year including all three outfield positions, second and third base and shortstop. She has 81 putouts and 43 assists for a fielding percentage of .954.
Gerdts earned league honors for her play in the outfield. She has started in all 52 games this season and has tallied 52 hits. She has hit two doubles, one home run with one RBI and tied for second on the team in batting average at .302. She is third in the conference in stolen bases with 16. She has recorded 34 putouts with 13 assists for a fielding percentage of .922.
Cantrell has started in all 52 games this season primarily at second base while also putting in time at shortstop. She is tied for second on the team in batting average with a .302, leading the team in home runs with 12. Her 12 homers rank her third in the league where she also ranks third in triples with three. She has a total of 48 hits with seven doubles, 19 walks and two stolen bases. She has a fielding percentage of .942 with 101 putouts and 41 assists.
Hood has appeared in 41 games this season with 38 starts. She has 27 hits with three doubles, nine home runs, 29 RBI and scored 12 runs. She has a slugging percentage of .553 and a .276 on base percentage. She is primarily an outfielder and spends time as the designated player. She has accrued a fielding percentage of .946. Hood is a majoring with a minor in chemistry and has a cumulative grade point average of 3.67. She has been a member of the deans list in all four years at Coastal and plans to attend Pharmacy School at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in the fall.
Liberty's Jessica Moore was named Player of the Year, while Winthrop's Mark Cooke earned Coach of the Year honors. Radford's Ashley Taylor was voted Pitcher of the Year, and Winthrop pitcher Megan Evans was named Freshman of the Year. Winthrop's Laura Hill was also named Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The No. 4 Chanticleers kick off tournament action tomorrow, taking on No. 5 Birmingham-Southern at 10 a.m. at the Coastal Softball Field.
