Softball's belden Tabbed BSC Player of the Year

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Coastal Carolina senior pitcher Stephanie Belden earned the Big South Conference's top softball award by being tabbed the Player of the Year at an awards banquet to kick off the 2002 McAlister’s Deli Big South Conference Softball Championship.

Belden, a native of Spring, Texas, has the Lady Chanticleers seeded No. 1 entering the Conference Championship with a 12-5 record and a 2.57 ERA. She went 5-0 against Big South competition, posted an incredible 0.66 ERA, and walked just four batters while striking out 24.

Fellow CCU senior pitcher Danielle Jenkins earned the Big South's Scholar Athloete of the Year Award and was selected to the All-Academic Team. Jenkins (designated player) joined Belden, outfielder Kimberly Josephson, second baseman Holly Lee and shortstop Kelli Julg as Lady Chanticleers who earned First Team All-Conference honors.

Senior pitcher Lauren Yates made it a successful return from last year's season-ending injury as she earned Second Team All-Conference honors. Senior firstbaseman Jennifer Schmidt joined Yates on the Second Team.

Winthrop pitcher Kelli Johnson was tabbed as the Big South's Rookie of the Year, while Patti Raduenz from Elon earned Coach of the Year for taking her team from a last place finish in the 2001 regular season to a second place finish this year.

The MVP, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and All-Conference teams are chosen by the head softball coaches and sports information directors at each member institution which sponsors softball. The All-Academic Team and Softball Scholar-Athlete are chosen by the League’s sports information directors.
