CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Big South Conference has announced that Kory Hayden has been selected as the Co-Freshman of the Year and to the First Team All-Conference along with Sarah Maples and Kiana Quolas. Maples also has been named to the Big South All-Academic Team.

Hayden is the sixth Coastal Carolina softball player to be named Freshman of the Year. Teammate Jazmin Daigle was the last Chanticleer to receive the award, collecting the honor in 2010. Hayden has played a pivotal role for Coastal, as she ranks in the top three of eight Big South offensive categories. The West Palm Beach, Fla., native is tied for first in the conference in home runs with 13 and has a league-leading 149 assists. Hayden leads the team in RBI (40), batting average (.389), slugging percentage (.722) and on base percentage (.483). The West Palm Beach Gardens High School product was named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Softball Player of the Week for games played Feb. 13-19.

Maples has played a key role for the Chanticleers defensively, splitting time between second base and the outfield. She has recorded only one error on the season and has a team-leading 13 stolen bases. She has started every game for the Chanticleers since she came to Coastal four years ago (224). This is the second year she has been named to the Big South All-Academic Team and she has been on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll in 2008, 2009 and 2010. She has made the Dean's List at Coastal in Fall 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Quolas has been outstanding from the circle for the Chanticleers, as the Oxnard, Calif., native leads the league in ERA (1.44) and is second in opponent batting average (.194). The Oaks Christian School product has recorded 22 wins from the rubber and was named The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week four times during the regular season. Nationally, Quolas is ranked 10th in shutouts (10.0), 25th in ERA and 35th in victories. The pitcher has also contributed offensively for the Chants, as she is batting .287 with 19 runs and 20 RBI.

Coastal returns to action on Thursday, May 10 in the Big South Conference tournament against Presbyterian at 11:30 a.m. in Radford, Va., at the Radford University softball field.
