ROCK HILL, SC - Top-seeded Coastal Carolina opened their play in the 2003 Big South Conference Softball Tournament with a victory over fifth-seeded Winthrop, 6-0, May 8. With the victory, Coastal moves to 35-15, while the Eagles fall to 25-31.
Coastal Carolina got on top in the bottom of the first, as senior Kimberly Josephson scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Chants a 1-0 lead. Senior Amanda DeGrendele made it 2-0 with her first home run of the season over the left field wall in the bottom of the second.
CCU padded the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on five hits and one Winthrop error to lead 5-0, with Josephson, senior Sara Thompson and senior Morgan Tolleson scoring. Another insurance run was added in the sixth, as Josephson again scored for the final 6-0 margin.
Josephson finished the game 2-for-2 with three walks and three runs scored, while senior Suzanne Kimbrell went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Christine Doyle, the leagues Rookie of the Year, picked up her ninth shutout and 19th win of the season, scattering three hits and striking out four in the complete game victory.
The Lady Chanticleers advanced to take on sixth-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Fri., May 9 at 5 p.m in the winners bracket. The two teams are the only ones still undefeated in the tournament, with the victor advancing to the Big South Championship, Sat., May 10 at 3 p.m.
