Softball to Host Appalachian State in Regular Season Final Weekend

Conway - Coastal Carolina University’s softball team looks to end the regular season on the upswing when they play host to Appalachian State Friday and Saturday (May 5-6).

Friday’s action will have the two teams playing a double-header with the opening game slated to begin at noon and game two beginning 30 minutes after the first games conclusion. Saturday’s single game will begin at 1 p.m.

The Chanticleers (29-22, 7-16 Sun Belt) are on the cusp of winning 30 games for the sixth consecutive season under Head Coach Kelley Green.

CCU is led at the plate by sophomore Taty Forbes, who not only is the CCU leader, but leads the Sun Belt in hitting with a .409 batting average. Junior Kailey Mellen is hitting .308 and has six home runs, 11 doubles and 33 rbi.

The pitching staff has been solid all season and Taylor Rahach leads the team in wins with 12. She has a 2.75 earned run average and the opponents are hitting .248 off her.

Ashley Guillette has 11 wins and paces the team in ERA (2.69), strikeouts (168) and in opponents’ batting average (.202).

Guillette and Rahach team with Devin Wallace (6-4, 3.29 ERA) to form one of the top strikeout staffs in the Sun Belt. The trio is second in the conference in strikeouts with 347 and leads the conference in strikeouts looking with 109. They are tied for a league-high five saves with their team ERA of 2.90 ranked fourth and are also fourth in opposition batting average at .237.

Appalachian State (14-31, 2-19 SBC) has struggled all season, but gained some momentum last week taking two of three off Texas-Arlington. The wins were their first conference wins of the season and also their first conference series win of the season.

Natalie Orcutt leads ASU with a .330 batting average and Cara Parker’s seven home runs are a team-high.

ASU’s two starting pitchers have solid credentials with Kenzie Longanecker sporting a 2.63 ERA to go along with her 9-12 record. She also had 111 strikeouts in 133 innings pitched. Vanessa Ciocatto has a 3.60 ERA and has pitched 72 innings this season.
