LYNCHBURG, Va. –The Coastal Carolina softball team split a doubleheader with Liberty on Friday, April 27. CCU was able to score a run in the eighth inning of game two for the 3-2 win at the Liberty Softball Field. With the split on the day, Coastal’s record improved to 20-31 on the season and 7-7 in conference action. Liberty’s record is now 33-21 on the season and 8-3 in Big South play.   In game two, CCU’s first hit of the day gave the Chanticleers a two-run lead in the top of the fourth inning.  Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) gave the Chanticleers the 2-0 lead by hitting her ninth home run of the year, a two-run blast to right-center field.   The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth as Ashley Williams hit her 11th home run of the year a two-run homer that tied the game at 2-2.   Neither team was able to score a run in the seventh, sending the contest into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South) moved Ashley Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) over to third on a sacrifice bunt, followed by a grounded ball to shortstop by Trish Kretchman (Berrien Spring, Mich./Lakeshore) that allowed Ashley Gerdts to cross the plate and give the Chanticleers the 3-2 lead.   The Flames were unable to match the score in their final at bat and allowed the doubleheader split.   Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) threw in all eight innings for the Chants as she struck out eight to improver her record to 10-16.   Coastal tallied two hits during the game as Sheppard was 1-for-2 with the two-run homer in the fourth and Brittany Birnbaum (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) was 1-for-3.   In the opening game, the Lady Flames jumped out to a quick three-run lead, due to three hits during their first at bat. Shannon McKain hit a triple into the right-field corner, that scored Dawn Jeffs. Jessica Moore then put a double into right-center and later scored on a squeeze bunt by Sarah Swor for the 3-0 lead in the first inning.   The score remained the same until the bottom of the third where the Flames scored on a Coastal wild pitch, pushing Liberty’s lead to 4-0.   Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) suffered the loss, falling to 6-10 on the season, as the senior struck out five in six innings.   Both teams will conclude their three-game conference series tomorrow afternoon with a single game at the Liberty Softball Field at 1 p.m.
