Softball Shuts out Birmingham-Southern 9-0 on Senior Day

CONWAY, S.C. Coastal scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the third inning to beat the Birmingham-Southern Panthers 9-0 on Sunday afternoon to win the series 2-1. CCU improves to 17-30 overall and 5-5 in Big South Conference play, while BSC drops to 22-27 overall and 3-6 in the league.
The Lady Chants went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single to left field from Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball), and increased the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer from Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion), her ninth of the season.
In the bottom of the third, Coastal expanded its lead to 9-0. The Chants scored on an RBI single from Ashley Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), an RBI double from Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South), a BSC wild pitch, an RBI single from Brittany Birnbaum (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala), an RBI double from Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball (Radford)), and an RBI single from Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing).
Neither team would score again and the game ended early in the middle of the fifth due to the eight-run rule.
Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) led Coastal with three of its 11 hits and finished the day 3-for-4. Her sister, Ashley Gerdts picked up two hits and finished 2-for-2 at the plate. The Panthers finished the game with three hits.
Freshman Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) now 8-14 on the season, picked up the win after throwing four innings and allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Trish Kretchman (Berrien Springs, Mich./Lakeshore) pitched the last inning and gave up two hits with one strikeout.
CCU saw three pitchers from BSC, but sophomore Melissa Muehlenfeld (0-2) took the loss after throwing 1.2 innings and allowing seven hits and five earned runs with three strikeouts.
Coastal is back in action this Wednesday, April 25, facing the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
