CONWAY, S.C -- The Coastal Carolina softball team fell to the Winthrop Eagles 2-0 on Thursday, Apr. 19.
Winthrop took an early 2-0 lead when Hilary Peacock hit a two-out, two RBI double to right center in the top of the first inning which proved to be the game-winning hit.
Coastal had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the first inning when Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball (Radford)) led off with a bunt single and later advanced to third on a passed ball. However, the Chants ended the inning with a strikeout.
The Chants (15-29, 4-5 BSC) had another chance to get on the scoreboard in the second when Brittany Birnbaum (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) walked and Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) singled up the middle with one out. Winthrops Evans then struck out the next batter and ended the inning with a ground out to short.
Getting the third and final hit for CCU was Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) singled through the left side in the fifth inning.
In the circle was Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) who through a complete seven-inning game and struck out four.
Coastal will be back in action this weekend as it begins a three-game series with Birmingham-Southern that begins with a double header on Saturday at 2 p.m.
