Softball Sweeps the Big South's Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Coastal Carolina softball team swept the weekly Big South Awards as redshirt junior pitcher Christine Doyle (Rio Rico, Ariz./Immaculate Heart Academy (NJ)) was named the New Balance Softball Pitcher of the Week and senior Kelly Feely (Livermore, Calif./Granada) was chosen as the Choice Hotels Player of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon, April 17.

Doyle had another masterful performance in the circle this past week. She was directly involved with five of Coastal's six wins on the week, as she went a perfect 3-0 with two saves. She was nearly unhittable in 18.2 innings of work with a 0.38 earned-run average. Further, she only allowed six hits and opponents only hit .097 against her for the week. Doyle began her week by coming in relief against Elon on April 11. She came into the game with CCU nursing a one-run lead with a runner on first and retired the next two batters in order to pick up the save. In the second game of the day, she was again called upon in relief. She delivered by getting out of a bases-loaded no out jam in picking up her second save of the day. Her third appearance of the week was a masterful performance against South Carolina on April 13, where she limited the Gamecocks to three hits and one run with five strikeouts in picking up her first win of the week in going the distance. In the second game of the day against South Carolina, Doyle was again called upon to come in relief. She went the final three innings with only a single hit allowed, while fanning five in winning her second game of the day and week. In her fifth and final game of the week she was again on her game as she limited the Buccaneers to two hits in winning her third game of the week with a complete game effort. Doyle now has a team-best 14 wins, three saves, 12 complete games and five shutouts this season.

Feely had solid week of action with seven hits in 19 at-bats. Among her seven hits, four went for extra bases. She hit three home runs to go along with 10 RBI and a double. Her slugging percentage was an impressive .895 while her on-base percentage was .400. She began the week by carrying CCU in its doubleheader sweep of Elon, as she went 4-for-6 with three home runs and seven runs batted-in. In the sweep of state rival South Carolina, Feely had the game tying RBI double in the second game that allowed Coastal to come back from a 5-2 deficit in the fifth inning, a game they eventually won 6-5 in eight innings. In the doubleheader sweep of conference rival Charleston Southern, Feely drove in the game-winning run in the first game and the game-tying run in the second game.

This was the fifth consecutive week that a Coastal softball player has been recognized by the league office. Doyle was named the Big South Softball Pitcher of the Week last week, April 10. Senior Meagen Johnson (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown (Furman)) was named the Big South Player of the Week on April 3. Three weeks ago, March 27, Johnson was also named both the Big South Player and Pitcher of the Week. Four weeks ago, March 20, senior Sara Hostetler (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) was also named the Big South Player of the Week.

Coastal (30-19) will next take the field on Wednesday, April 17, in a doubleheader against the College of Charleston (24-24) at 4 p.m. in Conway, S.C.
