Lady Chants Hold On For Sweep

CONWAY, S.C. — The Coastal Carolina softball team survived a late rally to sweep UNC Wilmington 4-0 and 5-4 Tuesday evening at Lady Chants Field. Stephanie Belden threw a two-hit shutout in the opener, and then pitched her way in and out of trouble to get the save in game two.

After trading runs in the first inning of the second game, the Lady Chanticleers (21-16) plated two in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Danielle Jenkins and a single by Jennifer Schmidt. They scored two more in the fifth inning on a wild pitch and Schmidt's triple to make it 5-1, as Lauren Yates (6-4) picked up the win, going 5.1 innings without allowing an earned run, but was lifted with runners at first and second with one out in the sixth. Belden got Coastal out of that jam, but was right back in the middle of another one an inning later as the first three Lady Seahawk batters all got hits. Audrey White's double drove home one run, and Summer Chriscoe's sacrifice fly cut the lead to 5-3. After a single and hit batter loaded the bases, UNCW (17-26) managed another run on a groundout, but left runners at second and third as Jamie Gostyla grounded back to Belden to end the game. Megan Clingman (5-9) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings.

Belden (9-4) allowed no such theatrics in the first game, retiring the first 10 batters she faced en route to her team leading eighth complete-game and second shutout of the season. The Lady Chants gave her all the support she would need in the first inning as Holly Lee doubled in Kimberly Josephson, and came around to score herself on Jenkins' third home run of the season. Amanda Wilson (5-6) took the loss, allowing four runs in 4.0 innings of work.

Josephson led the Coastal attack, going 2-for-3 in each game as the Lady Chants totaled 13 hits, while Wilmington's Lauren Mattox rebounded with a 3-for-3 effort in the second game, after going 0-for-2 in the first.

Coastal returns to Big South play this Thursday, April 18, when they host the College of Charleston at 4:00 pm, while UNCW travels to play East Tennessee State on Saturday.
