ROCK HILL, S.C. Coastal Carolina spoiled the Lady Eagles conference home opener as they connected on three homeruns to route Winthrop 6-1 in the first game
of this afternoons double header at Terry Field. TheLady Eagles bounced back to pick up the second game1-0. The win in game two put the Lady Eagles back at .500 in the Big South.
The Lady Eagles (17-21, 3-3) capitalized on a Coastal error to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Katie Kipisz connected on a one out single would advance to third when Coastal pitcher Stephanie Belden bobbled Katy Agees hit and would steal home after Agee stole second.
The lead would be short lived for Winthrop as Coastal (19-16, 2-2) came right back scoring two in the second off Suzanne Kimbrells two-run homerun. The Lady Chants added two more in the third. Kimberly Josephson and Danielle Jenkins led off with singles and both would score off a triple by Jennifer Schmidt. Coastal would continue the scoring attack as Belden would homer in the fifth and Holly Lee would hit a solo shot in the sixth.
Belden would shut down the Lady Eagles the rest of the way holding Winthrop to two hits in its last six at bats. Belden (8-4) allowed no earned runs in seven innings, walking one, and struck out seven. Josephson would finish with three hits while Kimbrell would add two along with two RBIs.
Caryn Little, Lauren Meyer, and Kipisz each had a hit for Winthrop. Kelli Johnson (15-9) takes the loss pitching seven innings allowing six runs, four earned, walking five, and striking out four.
The Lady Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the second game when Monica Alvarez singled home Megan Young in the bottom of the seventh to top Coastal 1-0.
Johnson went the distance, pitching a one hitter, walking only two batters while striking out six. Coastals Jenkins (5-4) also had a great game allowing only one run on four hits, walking two and striking out five.
