WILMINGTON, N.C. -Coastal Carolina sweeps a doubleheader with host UNC Wilmington, Apr. 1, with the Lady Chants winning the first, 8-0, and taking the second, 2-0. The Lady Chanticleers go to 23-12, while the Seahawks are now 16-22, including the Lady Chants taking three of the four meetings this season.
In the opener, Coastal got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, as freshman Sara Hostetlers triple to left scored senior Suzanne Kimbrell. The Lady Chants padded the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. Senior Kimberly Josephson led off with a double to left field and senior Holly Lee moved her to third with a single to left. In total, the Lady Chants pounded out 11 hits, the second most for CCU this season. Freshman Christine Doyle picked up her fourth shutout and 12th win of the year, giving up just one hit, that coming in the bottom of the sixth, while striking out six.
Coastal again opened on top in the nightcap, as Tolleson led off the second with a double and was later driven in freshman Lynee Hastings first collegiate home run, into the wind, over the center field fence to put the Lady Chants up, 2-0. Coastal took advantage of a UNCW miscue in the top of the seventh to get an insurance run and lead 3-0 on senior Amanda DeGrendeles RBI single, scoring pinch-runner Katey Allen. Freshman Brittany Nelson struck out career-best eight, including a streak of seven in a row, and had no walks in six innings of relief to go to 6-3 this season.
