CHARLESTON, S.C. The Coastal Carolina softball team defeated Charleston Southern 5-0 on Wednesday, Mar. 28. With the win, the Lady Chanticleers improved to 11-22 overall and 3-0 in the Big South Conference.
After three scoreless innings, senior Erika Trujllo (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Springs (Northern Colorado)) got things going for Coastal in the fourth inning with a homerun over the right field fence that also scored Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia).
In the fifth, the Lady Chants increased their lead to 3-0 when Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing) doubled to right center and scored Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) for Cantrells 15th RBI of the season. Gerdts finished the day going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Coastal added their final two runs in the top of the sixth. Trujillo went 2-for-3 in contest and ended the game with a triple down the right line that scored Laicole Walker (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate School) who was pinch running for Cillis. Trujillo then scored when Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) doubled to right field and brought the lead to 5-0, where it remained.
CCU finished the game with nine hits, two walks and five runners left on base. Freshman Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) pitched in all seven innings and struck out six batters. Frederick threw a total of 84 pitches with 66 of them being strikes. She improved her season record to 6-9.
Coastal returns home on Saturday, Mar. 31 to play a doubleheader with the Campbell Camels with the first game starting at 2 p.m. at the CCU Softball Field.
