CONWAY - Coastal Carolina's softball team returns home for its Big South Conference home opener on Wednesday, March 28, against Charleston Southern in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The Chanticleers enter the mid-week series with a 26-9 record and a 3-0 mark in the conference.
Coastal swept Big South opponent Presbyterian this past weekend winning 5-0, 8-2 and 11-2 in five innings. Kory Hayden recorded her 10th home run of the season on Sunday against the Blue Hose to put her tied for ninth on the Coastal single season record list for home runs. Desiree Zaragoza had a strong debut as she hit a home run to center field on the first pitch to her during the fifth inning to give Coastal the 11-2 advantage.
The Chanticleers are batting .273 and have an on-base percentage of .363. Coastal has 157 runs, 30 home runs, they have drawn 116 walks and have gone 35-for-46 on stolen base attempts. The Chants ranked 20th in the nation in ERA (1.65), 24th in fielding percentage (0.973) and 41st in home runs per game (0.86).
Hayden is 17th in the nation in home runs (10.0), 35th in slugging percentage (0.791) and 45th in runs batted in per game (1.0). She leads the team with a .407 batting average. Sarah Maples has recorded a team-high 23 runs, is 11-of-12 on stolen base attempts and is currently on a nine game hitting streak. Kiana Quolas is 14-4 on the season in the circle for Coastal and is ranked second in the nation in shutouts (8.0), 10th in earned run average (0.79) and 14th in walks allowed per seven innings (1.04). Quolas leads the conference in opposing batting average (.181), second in home runs allowed (1.0) and third in batters struck out (66).
Charleston Southern (18-13, 3-0 Big South) opened up conference play by beating Winthrop in three, winning 1-0, 4-2 and 3-1. The Buccaneers carry a .249 batting average, as well as a .343 on base percentage. Charleston Southern has recorded 113 runs on the season, 11 home runs, have been walked 91 times and have gone 14-of-19 on stolen base attempts.
Jessica Brock has a team high .337 batting average, while Megan Lombard has posted 24 runs. Jana Matthews has tallied 20 RBI on the season and Stephanie Sbardell has four home runs. Linzy Rother has been successful on 5-of-6 stolen base attempts, while Lizzy Olmstead has gone 4-for-4. Morgan Dowdy is 12-6 in the circle for the Buccaneers having pitched 120.1 innings. Dowdy has struck out 74, while allowing 44 runs, 32 walks and six home runs.
The Chanticleers return to action at home in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31 against Gardner-Webb with the first pitch being thrown at 1 p.m.
