Softball Wins First Game of Doubleheader Over UNC Wilmington 8-0 in Five Innings

WILMINGTON, N.C.- Senior Brittany Nelson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) was masterful for Coastal Carolina's softball team, going all five innings in the run ruled 8-0 win over UNC Wilmington on Wednesday, March 15 in Wilmington, N.C. For Coastal it was their ninth win in the last 10 games.

The Lady Chants broke through for three runs in the first inning. Senior Sara Hostetler (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) reached first, as the leadoff batter, on error from the shortstop. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came into score on the RBI double from senior Meagen Johnson (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown (Furman). Johnson scored on a home run to right center from junior Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball). For Sheppard it was her fourth home run of the season.

The Lady Chants added a run in the second, as junior Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) reached on an error from the UNC Wilmington second baseman. She moved to third on the single from junior Carla Hood (Marion, N.C./Marion) and came in to score on the sacrifice fly from Hostetler.

CCU plated another run in the third, as Johnson doubled to led off the inning. She moved to third on a ground out and came in to score on the two-out single from senior Kelly Feely (Livermore, Calif./Granada).

Coastal added three more runs in the fourth inning. The trouble began for the Seahawks after two were retired in the inning. Hostetler had a bunt single and moved to second on an error from the UNCW shortstop that allowed junior Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) to reach. Hostetler came into score on the error off the bat of Johnson from the UNCW leftfielder. Sheppard followed with a walk . Nelson singled to leftfield to score Johnson and Danyelle Gerdts and give Coastal an 8-0 advantage, which would be the final margin of victory.

Nelson (4-4) picked up her fourth win of the season going all five innings, striking out four and only allowing three hits for CCU.

Coastal has a second game against UNC Wilmington later this afternoon starting at 5 p.m.
