CLEARWATER, FLA-Senior Kelly Feely (Livermore, Calif./Granada) had the game-winning two run home run and threw a runner out at the plate, as Coastal Carolina's softball team (9-12) won its eighth straight game topping Chattanooga (15-16) 4-0 on the third day at the USF-Spring Break Invitational on March 11. CCU now advances into the gold medal round where it will take on Tennessee Tech at 6 p.m.
In the second inning Feely saved a run as she threw a runner out at the plate. Ashlon Clarkson singled to the pitcher with one out and went to third on the single by Toni Hutchinson, but was gunned out at the plate by Feely when she attempted to score, as the ball momentarily got away from CCU third baseman Sara Hostetler (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley).
The Lady Chanticleers threated after two were out in the third inning, as Hostetler and Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) both singled up the middle back-to-back, but were stranded as the next Coastal batter grounded out to first.
Coastal broke through for two runs in the fourth inning. Junior Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas//Ball) started the rally with a leadoff single. Sheppard was on for the ride on the home run from Feely to give CCU a 2-0 lead. It was third home run Feely has hit this season.
The Lady Chants added two more runs to its lead in the fifth inning as Danyelle Gerdts walked with one out and scored on the home run blasted to right field from senior Meagen Johnson (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown (Furman)). For Johnson it was her third home run of the tournament.
Senior Brittany Nelson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) was brillant. She threw a three-hit shutout for her third win of the season. The loss went to JayCee Wood as she gave up four runs in four innings.
Coastal continues its play in the USF-Spring Break Invitational against Tennessee Tech in the gold medal bracket later this evening, March 11 at 6 p.m.
