CLEARWATER, FLA-Senior Christine Doyle (Rio Rico, Ariz./Immaculate Heart Academy (NJ) pitched an outstanding game for Coastal going all nine innings, but CCU's softball team (9-13) was defeated by Tennessee Tech 4-3 in extra innings in the gold bracket game on the third day of the USF-Spring Break Invitational on Saturday, March 11.
The Lady Chants scored a run in the first inning. Junior Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) singled into right field to put a runner on first, a walk moved her to second and double by junior Kelly Feely (Livermore, Calif./Granada) drove her in for the first run of the game.
Tennessee Tech threatened in the third inning, as a triple by Beth Boden put a runner on third with two out, but Doyle was up to the challenge as she induced a ground out to second to escape the difficult situation.
In the fourth an error allowed Tennessee Tech's Stephanie Fischer to reach first to start the frame. She was quickly erased though as beautiful double play turned from the trio of shortstop Ashley Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) to second baseman Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) to first baseman Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) that allowed Coastal to get itself out of trouble.
Ashley Gerdts got the Lady Chants an insurance run in the fifth, as she led off the inning was a long home run the opposite way to give Coastal a 2-0 advantage.
TTU tied the score in the sixth inning, as both Boden and Katie Speiser had a one out singles and both came in to score on the double from Stephanie Fischer.
The game went to extra innings. Tennessee Tech's Katie Sutherland was place on second to start the eighth due to the international tie breaker rule. She advanced to second on the sacrifice bunt and came into score on the throwing error from the Coastal hurler to give TTU a 3-2 lead.
CCU tied the game in the eighth as Sheppard was placed on second to start the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. She came scored to tie the game as Coastal's Cillis laid down a safety squeeze.
TTU took the lead in the ninth, as Fischer was placed on second and came into score on the sacrifice fly from Krystian Dobbs.
Coastal's Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) was placed on second to start the ninth, moved to second on the sacrifice bunt but was stranded there as the next two Lady Chants were retired in order to end the game.
Doyle (3-4) took the hard luck loss for Coastal, as she went all nine inning giving up only two earned runs with seven strikeouts.
Coastal takes the field again on Wednesday, March 15 as the team travels to UNC Wilmington to take on the Lady Seahawks in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
