Arkansas Takes Two from Lady Chanticleers
CONWAY, S.C. The Arkansas Lady Razorbacks swept a softball doubleheader from Coastal Carolina on Monday afternoon, defeating the Lady Chanticleers 7-1 and 2-1.
In the opener, Arkansas' (18-8) Cortney Mitchell provided all of the needed offense with a pair of three-run homers. Mitchell, who now has five round-trippers on the season, became the first player in Arkansas' seven year softball history to hit multiple homers in one game.
Rachell Talley (9-2) pitched the victory for the Lady Razorbacks in the opener, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out eight. Morgan Tolleson (1-4) allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in two inning of work in taking the loss.
The second game was a pitchers duel as Coastal's Danielle Jenkins did battle with Arkansas' Valanna Lyons.
Lyons teammates got her out front first as Tiffany Woolley hit a leadoff infield single and later scored on a Blaire Woodward's single to rightfield. On that same play, Mitchell was thrown out at the plate to keep the Lady Razorbacks to just the one run lead.
Coastal Carolina answered in the bottom of the fourth as Kelli Julg led off the inning with her first homerun of the season.
The score remained tied until the top of the seventh inning when Arkansas plated a run on a pair of CCU errors. The most costly came by Jenkins as Woodward hit the ball back to her in the pitching circle and Jenkin's dropped the ball before throwing late to first. The play should have ended the inning, but instead allowed Woolley to score from third.
Heather Schlichtman came on in the bottom of the seventh to strike out the side and earn her fist save for the Lady Razorbacks. Lyons (2-2) allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out seven on her way to the victory.
Jenkins (2-1) took her first loss on the season as she scattered nine hits and allowed just one earned run while walking noone.
Coastal Carolina will continue its 11-game homestand on Tuesday when the Lady Chanticleers host Appalachian State at 2:00 p.m. That game can be heard live on Coastal's athletic web site beginning at 1:50 p.m. (http://www.coastal.edu/athletics).
