Coastal Set To Begin Sun Belt Play
CONWAY - Starting on Saturday afternoon at CCU Softball Stadium the Coastal Carolina Chanticleer softball team embarks on their conference portion of the 2018 schedule as they will host the reigning Sun Belt Conference champion, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.
The 13-8 Chants go into the weekend after competing in the Arizona State Tournament against the No. 16 Arizona State Sun Devils and the New Mexico State Aggies. Coastal picked up two wins last weekend and was led offensively by sophomore Kassidy Smith who batted .444 (4-for-9) with a homer, four runs batted in, and three walks.
Freshman Courtney Dean continues to hit consistently as she has been inserted into the Chants starting lineup. The Indian Trail, North Carolina native has had 40 at-bats this season and has hit .475 with 19 hits. Dean leads Coastal with three triples, a .825 slugging percentage, is tied for second on the team with three home runs, and second on the team with 11 runs batted in.
Pitchers Ashley Guillette and Kaitlin Beasley-Polko are in the top five of five Sun Belt pitching categories; wins, innings pitched, strikeouts and complete games. Guillette, leads the team with seven wins in 66 innings. The junior also has 67 strikeouts with five complete games. The freshman, Beasley-Polko is 6-4 in 60.1 innings and has team-highs of 73 strikeouts and seven complete games.
Louisiana goes into the weekend with a 12-5 record as last weekend they competed in the Judi Garman Classic against No.23 Michigan, No.8 Baylor, and Fresno State. The Ragin’ Cajuns came away with a 1-2 record with their only win came against the Bulldogs, 7-2.
Alissa Dalton is the leading hitter for the Ragin' Cajuns as the sophomore shortstop has a .403 batting average with three doubles, a homer, and 11 runs batted in. Three other Louisiana players are also batting over .300 on the season thus far; Kara Gremillion (.365), Brittany Rodriguez (.360), and Beth Ashley (.302).
The Ragin' Cajuns have used seven players in the circle in 2018, but are led by Summer Ellison. The sophomore has a league-leading 1.60 earned run average in 57 innings. Other notable pitchers are Kylee Jo Trahan and Casey Dixon. Trahan has a 2.04 ERA in eight appearances has earned a 3-1 record. Dixon has a perfect 3-0 record in seven appearances with a 3.27 ERA.
Action begins on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning a 1 p.m. and the last game of the day at 3:30 p.m. Sunday will wrap up the series with the Ragin' Cajuns with a single game that starts at 12 noon.
