More Information:
COLUMBIA, S.C. The Coastal Carolina University softball team dropped a doubleheader at South Carolina, 2-1 and 1-0, Mar. 7. With the losses, the Lady Chanticleers fell to 5-15 on the season, while the Gamecocks improved to 20-3.
In the first game, South Carolina took a quick lead in the first inning going on top 2-0 off two hits. In the third, Coastal got its first base runner, as Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South) reached first on a walk. She was advanced to second on Laicole Walker's (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate School) sacrifice bunt. Coastal then struggled against Gamecock pitcher Melissa Hendon and ended the inning with Irwin left on base.
In the fourth, CCU recorded their first hit and run when Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing) knocked a home run over the right field wall to bring the Lady Chants within one at 2-1. Cantrells homer was her second on the season. Despite three hits in the final three innings by the Gamecocks, the CCU defense held them to no runs but could not push across the tying run.
Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) gave up eight hits and two earned runs while striking out six batters in falling to 2-6 on the season. South Carolinas Hendon finished the game giving up two hits and one earned run while posting 10 strikeouts.
The second game was scoreless after two innings. In the third, the Gamecocks went on top 1-0 when Adele Voigt hit a stand-up triple to the right field fence. Lindsey Walker then doubled to right center to score Voigt, but Walker was thrown out at third to end the threat.
The game remained at 1-0 through the next four innings. To open the seventh, Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) popped out to left field. Cantrell was next in the lineup and singled with a hard hit ball up the middle. Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) put runners on first and second with a base hit to left field. Alyssa Tornatore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) then came in to pinch run for Cillis. Irwin stepped in to the batters box next and loaded the bases with a single. Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) was then struck out by USC pitcher Kate Pouliot for the second out. With the bases loaded, Erika Trujillo (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge Northern Colorado)) then flied out to left to end the game.
In game two, Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) threw all six innings, giving up one run and four hits, while fanning two.
