CONWAY, S.C.-Senior Sara Hostetler (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) hit the game-tying home run in the fifth inning, and sophomore Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle's Landing) singled in redshirt junior Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball (Radford) in bottom of the seventh inning as the Coastal Carolina softball team (4-12) defeated USC Upstate(14-5-1) in the second game of the day the at CCU Softball Field on March 7. The first game was a 4-1 CCU victory as the Lady Chanticleers swept both games of its doubleheader over the Spartans.
Hostetler's solo shot, her first of the season, tied the game up at three all. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Ashley Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) drilled a one out single up the middle. Tolleson then was reinserted to run, and took second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion). A wild pitch advanced her to third, before Cantrell turned on a ball down the rightfield line to give Coastal its fourth win of the season and second of the day.
USC Upstate began the scoring in the second game with three runs in the third inning. After senior starter Meagen Johnson (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown (Furman)) struck out Katie Adams, USCU's Heidi Gibbs doubled to the gap in centerfield. Erin Driggers then singled through the right side. The first run of the game was plated when Driggers put herself in a run down to score Gibbs from third. Driggers wisely scampered back to first, when the throw was misplayed in the rundown by CCU. After a walk to Shay Slater, both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Both Driggers and Gibbs came in to score on a single by Tiffany Pitcher to give the Spartans the 3-0 lead.
CCU rallied for two runs in the fourth, as junior Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) opened the frame with a single to centerfield and came into score on a home run blasted to centerfield by senior Kelly Feely (Livermore, Calif./Granada) to cut the lead to one.
Senior Brittany Nelson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) (2-4) earned her second win of the season, pitching two innings of relief, striking out four.
The first game of the day saw USC Upstate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Driggers doubled with one out, moved to third on the single from Slater, and came in to score on a fielding error by the CCU.
The Lady Chants tied the game up in the bottom of the first, as junior Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) tripled and scored on the single to the shortstop from Sheppard.
Coastal took the lead with two runs in the third inning. Cantrell doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a fielding error from the Spartans second baseman and scored on the sacrifice fly from Sheppard. Feely drove in the second run of the inning on an RBI single to left field.
The Chants added an insurance run in the fifth inning, as Hostetler walked and scored on the RBI single from Johnson to make the final score 4-1.
Redshirt junior Christine Doyle (Rio Rico, Ariz./Immaculate Heart Academy) won her first game of the season in the first game of the doubleheader, as she went the distance, scattering four hits while fanning seven.
Coastal next travels to Clearwater, Fla to participate in the USF-Adidas Spring Break Classic starting on Mar. 9 at 11 a.m. against Illinois.
