Softball Defeats Ohio State 6-0 In the Consolation Game Of The Crimson Classic

TUSCALOOSA, ALA. Coastal Carolinas softball team (2-12) defeated Ohio State (9-10) Sunday, March 5 in the consolation game of the Crimson Classic. Coastal snapped its nine game losing streak with the win.
Coastal broke through for three runs in the third inning. Senior starting pitcher Brittany Nelson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) was hit by pitch to begin the rally. Senior pinch runner Katey Allen (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston (Albertson College)) moved to second on a sacrifice from sophomore Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing). Junior Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) and senior Kelly Feely (Livermore, Calif./Granada) were hit by pitch and walked, respectively, to load the bases. Junior Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) followed with a three-run triple to centerfield to give Coastal a 3-0 lead.
CCU added three insurance runs to its lead in the sixth. Senior Lynee Hastings (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) walked to start the rally. Freshman pinch runner Kelsey Riffel (Wichita, Kan./Maize) moved to second on a single from Nelson. Cantrell loaded the bases with a walk. Feely walked with two outs to bring in Riffel for the fourth run of the game. Sheppard ripped a single to left field to score Nelson and Cantrell for the fifth and sixth runs of the game.
Nelson (1-4) was spectacular for Coastal going the distance in picking up her first win of the season. Nelson only allowed five hit, struck out eight OSU batters, while not allowing a runner past second base. The loss went to Kim Reeder for the Buckeyes, as she gave up three runs in two and two third innings of work.
The Lady Chants will now return home to play a doubleheader against USC Upstate Tuesday, March 7 at 3 p.m.
NOTES: Sheppards five RBIs were a season high for the team and a career high for her... Nelsons eight strikeouts were tied for the most recorded by a CCU pitcher this season. She also recorded eight strikeouts against Illinois State on February 10 Coastals eight walks as a team were a season best... Following the tournament Nelson and Meagen Johnson (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown (Furman)) were both named to the Crimson Classic All-Tournament Team.
