Softball Falls 7-1 to Kennesaw State in Final Day of Red and Blue Classic

OXFORD, Miss. The Coastal Carolina softball team finished the Red and Blue Classic with a 7-1 loss to Kennesaw State. With the loss the Lady Chanticleers fell to 5-13 on the season while Kennesaw State improved to 18-6.
Kennesaw State put a run on the board in the top of the first. Coastal then matched the run when senior Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) opened the game with a triple to center field and scored on a wild pitch.
The score remained at 1-1 for the next three innings. In the top of the fifth, Kennesaw States Jennifer Nolan hit a double into right center sending three runs across home plate and increased the lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing) reached first with a single just behind first base. Cantrell then moved to second when Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) singled to center field. Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded after Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) walked. Tolleson hit a ground ball to the short stop that the Owls turned into a double play to end the inning leaving the deficit at 4-1.
The Chanticleer defense held strong in the sixth holding the Owls to no runs or hits. In the second half of the inning, Kelsey Riffel (Wichita, Kan./Maize) singled to left field, but the Lady Chants couldnt get anyone else on base before going into the seventh.
Kennesaw State scored three runs in the final inning, but the Lady Chants couldnt overcome in their final at bat. With the 7-1 loss, CCU ended the tournament with a weekend record of 2-3.
Up next, Coastal will play a mid-week doubleheader in Columbia, S.C. against the South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday, Mar. 7 starting at 4 p.m.
