CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Coastal Carolina University's Bri Chiusano earned Big South Conference Softball Player of the Week honors, while teammate Kiana Quolas was named Co-Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
The duo helped the Chanticleers post a 5-1 record in the Coastal Carolina Invitational over the weekend, while outscoring their opponents 50-5.
Chiusano batted .500 in the tournament while scoring nine runs, driving in five and stealing seven bases. The sophomore leadoff hitter also drew seven walks and finished with a .650 on-base percentage. She scored at least one run in five of the games and multiple times in three of them. Chiusano tied a career-high with three hits against Marshall on Friday, and she set a career-high with four RBIs on a pair of two-run doubles later that day versus Maryland Eastern Shore. On Saturday, she drew walks on all six of her at-bats, scored five runs and stole four bases in games against Marshall and Saint Peter's. She scored both of the Chants' runs in their 2-1 win over the Thundering Herd.
It is the first weekly honor for Chiusano, who leads the team with a .425 average, 18 runs, 16 stolen bases and a .564 on-base percentage this season. She now has 45 career stolen bases, which already ranks third on CCU's all-time list.
Quolas notched a 2-1 record and a 0.70 ERA in three complete-game starts in the tournament. The junior right-hander allowed just two earned runs and six hits in 20 innings, while recording 26 strikeouts and only two walks. Against Marshall on Friday, she tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts in a one-hitter over six innings and followed with a nine-strikeout, two-hit performance against the Thundering Herd on Saturday. Her lone loss came despite allowing just three hits to Samford, when she retired 18 of the last 19 Bulldog batters over the final six innings.
For the season, Quolas is 6-3 with a 1.30 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 54 innings, while limiting opponents to a .159 average. She shares this week's conference Pitcher of the Week honor with Campbell's Courtney Roberts. It her 12th career honor and third this season, and marks the fourth straight week a Chanticleer pitcher garnered the award.
Coastal (11-4) returns to action on Thursday, March 6, when it hosts Jacksonville State at 5 p.m. to begin the Chanticleer Challenge. The Chants will then face Bryant and Furman on Friday (2:30 and 4:30 p.m.), Bryant again on Saturday (12 p.m.) and Appalachian State on Sunday (12 p.m.).
