TUSCALOOSA, ALA. Coastal Carolinas softball team (1-9) fell to Drake (5-9) 2-0 on Friday, March 3 at the Crimson Classic.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. The trouble began as junior Emily Hajduk singled to start the frame, a sacrifice fly advanced her to second. She stole third and came in to score on a throwing error from the Coastal catcher, giving Drake a 1-0 lead.
Coastal's Meagen Johnson (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown (Furman) doubled after two were out in fourth, but CCU was unable to drive her in as the score remained 1-0 heading to the fifth.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth, as senior Lindsay Larry came in to score from second on single from Jamie Desjarlais.
The fifth inning began promising for Coastal double as junior Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) doubled to start the inning. Sophomore Ashley Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) walked to put runners on first and second with only one out. An illegal pitch by Drakes Cassie Heller moved both runners into scoring position but a lineout and fly out ended the potential threat.
CCU again threatened in the sixth with Sara Hostetler (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) walking and a Johnson single putting runners on first and second. But the one out threat was silenced as the next two Lady Chants were retired in order.
The Lady Chants again threatened in the seventh as junior Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball (Radford) singled to start the inning. Sophomore Ashley Gerdts and Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing) both reached on an errors as Coastal now had the bases loaded with nobody out. A double play and a line out ended the threat as Drake held on for a 2-0 victory.
Brittany Nelson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) (0-3) took the loss for the Lady Chants Jessica Hicks (2-5) was the game one winner for Drake, with Cassie Heller picking up her first save of the year for the Bulldogs.
The Lady Chants will now play at 1:30 p.m. against Ohio State in the second game of the Crimson Classic.
