Softball Splits on First Day of Red and Blue Classic
OXFORD, MISS. -- Coastal Carolina's softball team continued its stint on the road in Oxford, Miss., opening the Red and Blue Classic with a 10-0 shutout win against Stephen F. Austin and a loss to Alcorn State on Friday, Mar. 2.
Coastal came out swinging early on Lady Jack pitcher Ashley Wilburn. In the first inning, the Lady Chanticleers went up 2-0 when junior Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing) singled to first base with a bunt and was brought home off Kristina Sheppards (Galveston, Texas/Ball) first of three home runs of the day.
Coastal then upped their lead in the second inning. Senior Erika Trujillo (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge (Northern Colorado)) made it a 4-0 game with her first career homer over the left field fence that also brought Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) home.
In the fifth inning, Coastal blew the game open with six runs on seven hits. Senior Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) opened the inning with a single up the middle. Cantrell then doubled to right center, scoring Gerdts and giving Cantrell her third RBI of the season. With Cantrell at second, Sheppard then smacked the ball over the left field fence for her second homer of the day. Senior Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball (Radford)) then singled to right field and advanced to second when Brittany Birnbaum (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) reached first with a shot down the right line. Hood then scored Tolleson and Birnbaum with her first home run of the season over the centerfield fence.
In the circle for Coastal was freshman Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent). Frederick threw all five innings, allowing only two hits and struck out three batters in picking up her second win of the season and first shutout of her collegiate career.
In game two, the Lady Chants fell 5-2 to the Lady Braves from Alcorn State.
Alcorn took the lead in the first inning when Tonya Nelms homered over the left center fence, scoring two runs. Sheppard then brought the score to 2-1 with her second double of the day and 13th RBI of the season with a shot down the left line.
In the fourth, Sheppard hit her third home run of the day. She finished the day going 5-for-6 at the plate with two doubles and three homeruns. Cantrell went 2-for-5 with one RBI and Gerdts was 3-for-7.
Coastal returns to action in the Red and Blue Classic on Saturday, Mar. 3 taking on Ole Miss at 6 p.m. and Southern Mississippi at 8 p.m.
