Chants Set To Travel To Arizona State Tournament
CONWAY - Coastal Carolina softball will be hitting the road for the first time this season as they travel to Tempe, Arizona for the Sun Devil Tournament to face No. 16 Arizona State and New Mexico State. Action will start Friday and will run through Sunday.
The Chanticleers go into the weekend with an 11-5 record as they picked up wins last weekend in the Chanticleer Showdown versus Georgetown. Coastal's Courtney Dean was the Sun Belt's Co-Player of the week as she hit .600, going 9-for-15. The freshman had her biggest hit of the weekend in walk-off fashion as she tripled over the right fielder's head, scoring teammate Mackenzie Budinger from second base.
Pitcher Ashley Guillette was solid for the Chants, appearing in all five games while picking up a win and a save. The Chanticleers used all three pitchers last weekend but Guillette saw the most time in the circle as she threw 21.2 innings with an earned run average of 2.58.
Along with fellow starter Kaitlin Beasley-Polko, the junior hurler is part of the reason of the Coastal staff leads the Sun Belt Conference with a 2.09 earned run average. Respectively, Beasley-Polko and Guillette have 1.80 and 1.98 earned run averages that are good for third and fourth best in the conference.
The Sun Devils come into the weekend No. 16 in the nation as they have already picked up wins this season against other Power Five conferences such as the SEC, Big 10, and the ACC, but one loss that comes part to their 13-2 record is a 7-2 loss against No. 4 Oklahoma.
Last week during the Mary Nutter Tournament, ASU knocked off Mississippi State, LIU Brooklyn, Liberty, and Cal State Fullerton.
At the plate this season, the Sun Devils are sixth in the Pac-12 with a .323 batting average, fifth with 83 RBI, and fourth with 16 home runs.
Two Arizona State players are batting .400 or better thus far in 2018. Morgan Howe leads the team with a .426 average, has three homers and second on the team with 13 RBI. Kindra Hackbarth follows right behind with a .419. To note, Maddi Hackbarth leads the Sun Devils with 22 RBI as she has hit five homers.
Arizona State's pitching staff ranks sixth in the Pac 12 with 1.84 ERA and is led by three pitchers with earned run averages under 3.00. Dale Ryndak leads the staff with a .89 ERA while earning three wins. Giselle Juarez has picked up four wins in four complete games with a 1.75 ERA. Breanna Macha leads the team with five wins, three complete games, and a 2.53 ERA.
NEW MEXICO STATE
The Aggies come into the weekend with a 9-5 record, most recently picking up a 5-2 record last weekend at the UTEP Tournament.
Offensively, New Mexico State has seven batters with a .300 average or better. Shelby Shultes is the leading hitter for the Aggies as she's hit .407 in 11 games. Shultes has also hit three homers which is tied for best on the team to along with her 12 RBI which is tied for second best.
Statistically, Kayla Green leads the Aggies in the circle as she has put together a record of 6-3 in ten appearances with a team-best 3.39 ERA.
