Dean Named Sun Belt Co-Player Of The Week
NEW ORLEANS, LA - Freshman softball player Courtney Dean was named Sun Belt Conference Co-Player of the Week for her performance last weekend, the Sun Belt Conference office announced Wednesday morning.
Dean helped lead the Chanticleers to two wins as they hosted the Chanticleer Showdown at CCU Softball Stadium in Conway. Overall, the freshman went for 9-for-15 for a .600 batting average, three stolen bases and one run batted in.
On Sunday, with no outs, and sophomore Mackenzie Budinger on second base in the top of the eighth inning, the Indian Trail, North Carolina native roped a triple over the Georgetown Hoyas right fielder's head. Budinger unsure if the outfielder was going to catch the ball tagged up but eventually scored as the ball went to the fence.
Her biggest play may have come on defense as the freshman threw out a runner at home in the top of the fourth that stopped the go-ahead run.
In the five games of the weekend tournament, Dean had two or more hits, three times.
So far in 2018, the Chants' outfielder has hit .519 with three homers, nine runs batted in, and slugging percentage of .924.
For the Chanticleers softball program, Dean's selection is a first as part of the Sun Belt Conference.
Dean and the rest of her Coastal teammates travel to Tempe, Arizona to take part in the Sun Devil Classic against Arizona State and New Mexico State, March 2-4.
