CONWAY - After going a perfect 4-0 in its first home tournament last weekend, the Coastal Carolina softball team looks to keep it going when it hosts the Coastal Carolina Invitational this Friday through Sunday at Carolina Forest High School.
Joining the Chanticleers in the field for the 13-game event are Albany, Drexel, Western Carolina and Wichita State. The tournament schedule has five games set for Friday and Saturday before wrapping up with three on Sunday. Coastal plays its first game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday against Drexel, before taking on Albany at 6:30 p.m.
The Chants (6-8) banged out eight home runs in their four games of the Kickin' Chicken Classic last weekend, with Kory Hayden hitting three and Kiana Quolas adding two. Quolas also had two doubles and drove in nine runs and is on a six-game hitting streak. Ashley Bagwell notched three wins in the circle, allowing just seven hits and striking out 22 in 16.2 innings. Quolas pitched a complete-game five hitter in her only start.
Albany (0-5) opened its season last weekend at a tournament hosted by Florida Gulf Coast. The Great Danes were the preseason favorite in the America East Conference and are led by league player of the Charlise Castro and first-team all-conference pitcher Brittany MacFawn.
Drexel (2-6) was picked sixth in the Colonial preseason poll and features all-CAA second team selections Jenn Reading and Maddison Timoteo.
Western Carolina (5-6) was tabbed seventh in the Southern Conference preseason poll. The Catamounts went 3-2 in a tournament at the University of Florida two weeks ago, before losing their only two games in a tournament at Charlotte last weekend. Senior Shemekia Scotton is hitting .524 so far this season to lead the squad.
Wichita State (5-8) was picked to finish eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference. Left-handed pitcher Sloan Anderson is 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA in seven appearances this season.
