Softball Gets a 3-2 Win Over Lehigh and Falls to Georgia 5-1

COLUMBUS, Ga. The Coastal Carolina softball team finished day two of the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Lady Chanticleers (3-9) led the No. 18 Georgia Bulldogs 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Georgia scored five runs on five hits going on top 5-1 for the win. Coastal then picked up their third win when Lehigh pitcher Tiffany Curtis walked in a Coastal run for the 3-2 victory in the bottom of the seventh.
Coastal scored in the first inning when senior Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) reached first on a walk and was then sent home on a Bulldog error.
CCU held the lead for a majority of the game until the Lady Bulldogs had a huge sixth inning. Kellie Middleton put the Bulldogs on top 2-1 on an RBI single. Chelsea Cantillo sent two additional runners home on a two-RBI single to left field while Megan McAllister collected an RBI double to cap off the Georgia scoring.
Coastal left a total of nine runners on base in the contest while George left 10. Freshman Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) took the loss after allowing four earned runs, 10 hits and striking out five in 5.1 innings.
In game four of the Classic, the Chants were down 1-0 after the first inning with freshman Brittney Hollifield (Rockford, Tenn./Alcoa) leading the Chants from the circle who pitched for the first two innings before being replaced by Danyelle Gerdts. Gerdts threw for 3.2 innings and was then swapped for Ashley Frederick for the final inning.
Despite landing runners on base in both the second and fourth innings the Lady Chants didnt come across home plate until the fifth. Senior Erika Trujillo (Littleton, Colo./ Dakota Ridge/Northern Colorado)) singled off a bunt and beat the throw to first. Gerdts then singled with a shot through the left side advancing Trujillo. Junior Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing) moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) tallied her first double of the season with a hit into left field that scored both Trujillo and Gerdts and tied the game 2-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Mountain Hawks made a pitching change, but it proved to be a little too late. Sophomore Kelsey Riffel (Wichita, Kan./Maize) stepped into the box with two outs, the game tied at 2-2 with bases loaded. Riffel watched four straight pitches and took a walk from Lehigh pitcher Tiffany Curtis which walked in a run for the 3-2 lead and the victory.
CCUs seed in Sundays bracket play will be determined at the conclusion of Saturdays games at the South Commons Complex.
