WILMINGTON, N.C. - Pinch hitter Kelly McCoy singled home pinch runner Sarah Allain with two-out in the sixth for the eventual game-winning run as Coastal Carolina defeated host UNC Wilmington, 3-2, in the championship game of the Seahawk Classic at Boseman Field in Wilmington, N.C. CCU wrapped up the event with a 6-1 record, including avenging their only loss in the tournament to UNC Wilmington in the championship game.
The Chanticleers took the early lead in with one run in the top of the third on Brittany Nelson's two-out single that scored Holly Lee from second base.
CCU extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth on Sara Thompson's sacrifice fly to center scoring Amanda DeGrendele. DeGrendele led off the inning with a walk.
UNCW tied the game at 2-all with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Laura Hendrickson led off with a walk and later scored with two-out on a single by Mary Susan Hilliard. Hilliard scored the tying run on Melissa Moore's single to right center.
CCU freshman pitcher Christine Doyle, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, hurled a complete game allowing two runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out one. Senior infielder Holly Lee was also named to the All-Tournament team for Coastal Carolina.
This was a long day for Coastal, as the Lady Chanticleers had to finish their game against Coppin State that was suspended for weather on Saturday, winning the game 15-1 in five innings. CCU then defeated UMBC 4-0 to advance in the tournament to the semifinals later Sunday. Coastal defeated Gardner-Webb, 4-0 to then advance to tonight's championship game, their fourth game of the day.
Coastal will have the week off and get back in action on Sat., Mar. 1, hosting Charlotte for a doubleheader at noon.
