Softball Drops Third Straight at Carolina Classic against Ohio, 8-7
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. The Coastal Carolina University softball team finished day two of the Carolina Classic falling to the Bobcats from Ohio University with a score of 8-7 in eight innings.
The Lady Chanticleers took a 2-1 lead in the second inning off hits from Brittany Birnbaum (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) and Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball (Radford)) before heading into the third inning.
In the fourth inning Coastal took a comfortable 5-1 lead in fourth after Erika Trujillo (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge (Northern Colorado)) put a shot into left field and gets her fourth career double and Tolleson put one over the fence for her first home-run of the season and scoring two other runners.
The Bobcats brought the score to even scoring in the sixth and seventh innings forcing the contest into an extra inning. CCU being visitors on the scoreboard, were at bat first in the eighth inning and scored two runs off a single from Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) and double from Laicole Walker (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate School) to go on top 7-5.
The Lady Chants then took the field needing three outs to get the victory, but couldn'tt get the stop as the Bobcats get base hits out of their second and third batters and then a triple from their fourth batter which scores three in the tie-breaker and seals the victory for the Bobcats with a final score of 8-7.
Getting the start on the mound for CCU was freshman Brittney Hollifield (Rockford, Tenn./Alcoa) who pitched for five innings allowing six hits and three runs before being replaced by both Trish Kretchman (Berrien Springs, Mich./Lakeshore) (2 hits,1 run) and Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) who finished the contest allowing six hits and four runs.
The Coastal Softball squad will finish the weekend tournament taking on North Carolina State at 2:30 on Sunday, Feb. 11.
