CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team opens the 2012 season on Saturday, Feb. 11 against George Washington as part of the Kickin' Chicken Classic. The Chanticleers are hosting the event that runs from Friday through Sunday, Feb. 10-12. Coastal hasn't opened at home since 2007.
The Kickin' Chicken Classic opens on Friday, Feb. 12; however, the Chants won't make their 2012 debut until the second game on Saturday, as they meet George Washington at noon for the first time in school history.
George Washington finished the 2011 season 16-27-1 overall and 6-14 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, ranking ninth in the league.
Coastal then faces George Mason at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Coastal Carolina and the Patriots last met on Feb. 13, 2004, in the Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C., with the Patriots earning the win.
The Chanticleers wrap up the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 12 as they play Marshall at noon and Georgia Southern at 2 p.m. Marshall is opening its season on the road once again, as the Thundering Herd haven't played in a season opener at home since the softball program was reinstated in 1994. Coastal holds a slight 7-6 advantage over Georgia Southern, although the Eagles won the last meeting against the Chanticleers in the NCAA Athens Regional in Athens, Ga., in 2006.
The Chanticleers won the 2011 Kickin' Chicken Classic with a 4-1 record after twice downing Saint Joseph's and Bucknell.
Seven starters and 13 letterwinners return for Coastal, while eight freshman will suit up for the first time as Chanticleers. Expected to lead the team this year are Chelsea Pineda, a second team All-Conference member, Sarah Maples, an Academic All-Conference member, as well Stacy Snellings and Ashley Bagwell, who were both Big South All-Tournament members.
