CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team begins its 2013 season Friday when it takes on Missouri State and Kennesaw State as part of the Georgia Tech-Kennesaw State Invitational.

The defending Big South Tournament champion Chanticleers will see their first action Friday at 1 p.m. against Missouri State before facing tournament co-host Kennesaw at 5 p.m. Both games will be played at Kennesaw's Bailey Park.

Coastal will then shift to the Georgia Tech campus for games on Saturday and Sunday. The Chants will take on the Yellow Jackets Saturday at 2 p.m. and face Missouri State for the second time at 4 p.m. Another matchup against Georgia Tech Sunday at 1 p.m. concludes the tournament.

Friday's game will be CCU's first-ever meeting with Missouri State. The Bears were 25-26 last season and finished sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Kennesaw was the Atlantic Sun Conference co-champion last year, finishing 33-24 after losing in the A-Sun Tournament championship game. The Owls have won all five of the previous matchups against Coastal, but the teams have not faced each other since 2007.

Georgia Tech was 37-23 in 2012, won the ACC Tournament and, like Coastal, went 1-2 in NCAA regional play. The Chanticleers own a 6-4 series edge, however the Yellow Jackets have won the last three games.

CCU, which has won its last three season-opening games, returns eight starters from last year's team that tied a school record with 44 victories. The Chanticleers were picked to win the Big South in the conference's preseason poll.
