CONWAY - With its season and home opener just over two weeks away, the Coastal Carolina softball team is now in full-scale preparation mode. The Chanticleers are nearing the end of their first week of full squad spring practices and are anxiously awaiting the start to the 2014 campaign, and with it, their return to the new and improved Coastal Carolina Softball Stadium on campus.
"That's going to be a big boost for us," head coach Kelley Green said. "Carolina Forest was a very nice high school field, but to be able to play back on campus, we're all very excited about that and getting a bigger crowd for games and having that homefield advantage back. The players are going to get excited about coming out to play on this field. They're just going to have more pride and when you have level of pride, you come out and play harder every day."
Coastal welcomes back 13 players, from last year's team that won the Big South regular-season championship, including eight starting position players and all three pitchers. A total of six seniors are set for their fourth and final seasons in teal and black.
"The team came back in great shape and did the best on their conditioning test since I've been here," Green said. "For them to come back having dedicated themselves to their offseason workouts is great. That allows us to be able to do the high repetition infield, outfield and pitching reps and makes us further along than we have been in the past."
The returners are joined by a group of five newcomers, including a pair of junior college transfers and three freshmen, all looking to continue a trend of first-year Chants making an immediate impact.
Coastal begins the 2014 season on Saturday, Feb. 8 when it hosts College of Charleston at 5 p.m.
