Coastal Softball Wraps Up Fall Season, Wins Three

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team wrapped up its Fall season this past Saturday with a doubleheader against the College of Charleston. The Chanticleers played a total of six games this fall, including three games against UNC Wilmington and one versus Mount Olive.
Coastal traveled to Wilmington, N.C. on Saturday (Sept. 24) to take on Mount Olive in their first game and fell by a score of 8-4. Junior Jazmin Daigle went 1-for-1, with a run and two walks. Daigle scored in the first inning on a single by redshirt junior Cacia Pierre giving the Chants their first run of the game. Freshman Kiana Quolas went 1-for-3 against the Trojans and scored a run, while being walked once. Pierre finished the game going 2-for-2, with one run and an RBI. Pierre scored in the third during Hayden's at bat that put Coastal ahead 3-0. Freshman Paige Lloyd recorded a home run in her second at bat of the fall season in the top of the seventh.
Later that day, the Chanticleers played UNC Wilmington, winning by a score of 4-0. Quolas went 2-for-4 in the game, tallying a run and a walk and earned the win on the mound after pitching a complete game, while allowing only three hits.
On Oct. 1 Coastal Carolina would again face UNC Wilmington, this time at home in a doubleheader. The Chants fell by a score of 5-2 in the first game, as UNC Wilmington picked up two runs in the fifth and three in the ninth. Sophomore Brooke Donovan and freshman Kory Hayden each recorded an RBI, with Donovan's coming in the third inning and Hayden's taking place in the sixth to tie the score at 2-2. Lloyd scored on a double by Donovan and Pierre scored on a single by Hayden.
During the second game Coastal would win 3-1 with Quolas earning her second win on the mound after recording six strikeouts and no walks. Daigle scored a run in the bottom of the first and Hayden scored in the second to put the Chants ahead 2-0. UNC Wilmington recorded its only run in the fourth inning. The Chants scored their final run in the sixth when freshman Kelsey McNaughton crossed home plate on a single by Hayden.
In the final doubleheader of the season, Coastal hosted College of Charleston. The Chants lost in the first game, 2-1, after the Cougars scored twice in the seventh. Sophomore Ashley Bagwell pitched all seven innings in the first game. Senior Sarah Maples recorded CCU's only run of the first game, as she scored in the second inning on a double by Hayden.
Coastal earned a 4-0 victory in the second game. Quolas took to the mound in the second game, giving up only one hit. Sophomore Nicole Saggiomo picked up two hits, one run and two RBI. Sophomore Jessie Winans scored in the third on a single by Saggiomo to tie the game at one apiece. Saggiomo then drove in sophomore Tamara Hawkins on a single in the fifth inning, before scoring the final run on a double by Donovan.
Quolas recorded three wins for Coastal on the mound with a total of 14 strikeouts and one walk. Bagwell also posted 14 strikeouts in her three appearances.
"Our fall season has been productive and I have been pleased with our progress as a team," said head coach Kelley Green. "We need to continue to progress in all areas during the off-season in order to be prepared to achieve our goals in the spring."
Coastal will open up the Spring season by hosting the Kickin' Chicken Classic, which will run from Friday to Sunday, Feb. 10-12.
