April 25, 2010
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University softball team took the final of the three-game series against Presbyterian with a 3-0 shutout win on Senior Day at the CCU Softball Field Sunday, April 25. The Chanticleers won the weekend series 2-1 and improved to 23-25 overall and 4-8 in the Big South while the Blue Hose fell to 18-24 and 2-13 in the league.
The Chanticleers got on the board early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Ashley Pisone and Stacy Snellings led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Jazmin Daigle followed with a single up the middle and touched every base on fielding and throwing errors by the center fielder, clearing the bases for a 3-0 Chant lead.
Presbyterian tried to get on the board in the second as Leslie Hensley led off the inning with a single to left field. Brittany Howell reached base after being hit by a pitch, giving the Blue Hose runners at first and second with no outs. Amanda Miller advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt, but they were left stranded as the Blue Hose could not come up with a hit and eventually grounded out to end the inning.
The first inning runs proved to be enough as both teams went on a defensive stance. As a team, Coastal posted eight hits with Sarah Maples going 2-for-3 at the plate to the lead the Chants.
Senior pitcher Ashley Frederick pitched her fourth shutout and 18th complete game of the season, allowing four hits and striking out four. She improved to 13-14 on the season while Presbyterian’s Leslie Hensley took the loss, falling to 8-11.
Coastal finishes up the regular season on the road by traveling to Winthrop May 1-2 and Liberty May 7-8, before returning home to host the Big South Championship May 13-15.
