CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team dropped both Big South Conference games against Radford Saturday, April 17,being shut out in the first game of the day 6-0 and falling 9-1 in game two at the Coastal Carolina Softball Field. The Chanticleers fall to 20-23 overall and 2-6 in the Big South Conference while the Highlanders improve to 28-10 and 13-1 in the league.
The first two innings were quick and defensive for both teams in the first game, but Radford struck first in the top of the third as Lauren Williams singled with one out. Williams advanced her way to third on a ground out and ran home on a wild pitch to put Radford on the board 1-0.
Radford continued to build on their lead as Hope Creasy sent a long ball over the right center field fence in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 advantage.
In the fifth, Michelle Beall hit a single to right field, and advanced to second on an error. Beall finished off her route by scoring on a wild pitch, giving the Highlanders a commanding 3-0 lead.
Sarah Himan hit a two-run home run in the beginning of the sixth inning before Meredith Moore added another run on the board with a dinger over the left center field fence, giving the Highlanders three runs in the sixth, upping the score 6-0.
The Highlanders held the Chants to just one hit by Jazmin Daigle in the first, as Chelsea Kelley earned the win, improving to 17-5 on the season after tallying nine strikeouts. Katelin Edwards fell to 10-8 on the season, allowing six runs on six hits. Megan Johnson pitched in relief for the Chants, tallying three strikeouts in 1.1 innings worked.
In game two, Radford scored at least one run in every inning except the fifth and finished the game with 11 hits compared to Coastal Carolina’s four with one run scored.
In the first, the Highlanders brought across two runs after Himan had a sacrifice fly to bring home Kristen Shifflett, who led off the game with a single up the middle. The second run of the inning came from Shannon Keefe, who came home on a passed ball.
With an early 2-0 lead, Radford put the game away, scoring five runs in the second inning to give the Highlanders a 7-0 lead. Taylor Cunningham scored after Kristen Shifflett doubled to right center and Lauren Williams came home on a wild pitch. The third Highlander run of the inning came on a throwing error, sending Shifflett home. Himan, who was walked, came across the plate from a double by Keefe, who later scored on a throwing error for the final run of the inning.
The Highlanders added one run in both the third and fourth, bringing the lead to nine.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Chants finally got on the board. Alyssa Tornatore led off the inning with a single to the second baseman, giving Coastal its fourth base runner of the game. Ashley Pisone earned the RBI with two outs after recording a triple down the right field line to send Tornatore home for the first Chanticleer run of the day.
Megan Johnson got the start in the circle for the Chants, allowing seven runs on six hits and taking the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Katelin Edwards came in to finish out the game, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out four. Kellie Snooks of Radford earned the win to improve to 7-3 on the season.
Coastal Carolina will finish out the three-game series against Radford on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
